Easton Press: JOHN ADAMS: MASSACHUSETTS: 2 VOLS: ABIGAIL: 2nd PRESIDENT

Description: Easton Press leather edition of Page Smith's "John Adams," Volume 1: 1735-1784, and Volume 2: "John Adams, 1784-1826," COLLECTOR'S editions, two of the LIBRARY OF THE PRESIDENTS series, published in 1988. Bound in hunter green leather, the books have paper end leaves, satin book markers, acid-free paper, Symth-sewn binding, hubbed spine, gold gilding on three edges---in near FINE condition. John Adams lived from 1735-1826 and served as the second President of the U.S., 1797-1801. As Massachusetts delegate to the Second Continental Congress in 1755, John Adams nominated GEORGE WASHINGTON Commander-in-Chief of what became the U.S. Army. Volume one begins with Adams' birth in 1735 and ends in 1784 when he was Commissioner to Trance. Born in Braintree, Massachusetts, Adams graduated from HARVARD and after a short time as a school teacher, he became a lawyer. Adams married ABIGAIL SMITH and they became parents to five children. She was his best friend, his coach, and his salvation during his darkest hours. Volume two begins where Volume one left off, and concludes with Adams' death in 1826. The book covers his final frustrating years as Ambassador to London, his tumultuous career as Vice President and President, and his twilight years as a farmer and master commentator on the country's events. As Vice President, he felt hw was underpaid, underappreciated, and underutilized. Adams and THOMAS JEFFERSON had begun their association as dear, trusted friends, only to have conflicting dogmas and extenuating circumstances drive them apart. By the time Adams and Jefferson ended their term together as President and Vice President, they were not on speaking terms. During Adams' frequent absences from the farm, Abigail tended to the family and the farm and guided their children and grandchildren. Ultimately, Adams and Jefferson reconnected and had an interesting correspondence. FOLKS, this is history at its finest. Page Smith was a PROFESSOR OF HISTORY at UCLA and a member of the Coluncil of the Institute of Early American History and Culture of Williamsburg, Virginia. His many years of exhaustive research, included the unearthing of many rare letters. Vol. 1 has 599, plus Notes and Volume 2 concludes with 1170 pages, including an Index. I offer Combined shipping.
