Description: East of Eden, John Steinbeck First UK edition, first printing of Steinbeck's most ambitious novel and the one which he considered his magnum opus. Signed by Steinbeck to the half-title and an important association copy, being from the collection of actor and naval officer Douglas Fairbanks Jr, with his bookplate affixed to the front pastedown. During World War 2, Steinbeck accompanied the commando raids of Douglas Fairbanks Jr.'s Beach Jumpers program, which launched small-unit diversion operations against German-held islands in the Mediterranean. At one point, he accompanied Fairbanks on an invasion of an island off the coast of Italy and used a Thompson submachine gun to help capture Italian and German prisoners. Some of his writings from this period were incorporated in the documentary Once There Was a War (1958). London: William Heinemann, Ltd., 1952. Publisher's original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt; pp. (vi), 525. A very good copy in a very good, unclipped dust jacket. Binding sturdy, a touch overopened at the title page, minimal wear to boards. Scattered foxing to text block edges and the half-title page. Jacket shows light general shelfwear, a couple small closed tears, crease to front panel. A presentable copy with an important association, protected in archival mylar.
