Description: Early Yokohama 1887 and 1889 German Club Scarce Postal Cards Lot of 8 These German Club (Club Germania in Yokohama) meeting notice cards from the 1880s are hard to find. We have a group of 8 here, all addressed to Heinrich Wilfried Spinner (1854–1918) in Tokyo. He arrived in Yokohama, Japan, on September 7, 1885, as the first missionary and co-founder of the Allgemeiner Evangelisch-Protestantischer Missionsverein (AEPM). Initially, he settled in Tsukiji, Tokyo, and later moved to Suzuki-cho, Surugadai, where he lived in a house provided by the German United School (Doitsu Kyōkai Gakkō) and taught history, English, and religion there. He quickly established evangelical parishes in Tokyo and Yokohama, serving a congregation of Swiss and German expatriates, mainly merchants, and was known for his liberal yet morally strict approach. Spinner was dedicated to fostering education and religious practice among the German-speaking community in Japan. In 1889, he founded the Doitsu Gakuin, a boys' school for the children of his parish, but it closed in 1892 due to financial and organizational challenges. He also spearheaded the construction of a parish church in Tokyo, commissioning architect Hermann Muthesius in 1889. Although Spinner left Japan before its completion, his efforts laid the groundwork for the church's eventual construction. Throughout his six years in Japan, Spinner worked tirelessly as a missionary, parish priest, and educator. He tried to establish German-Swiss parishes in Kyoto and Kobe but faced setbacks. Spinner, along with Otto Schmiedel, also founded the Shinkyo Shingakkō, a theological school that operated until 1907. Due to ongoing conflicts with Schmiedel, Spinner decided to return to Germany in 1891, departing Japan on April 1, 1891, aboard the S/S "General Werder," marking the end of his impactful mission in Japan.
