Description: This excellent condition antique sterling snuff box is a table size . It is marked inside the lid with the hallmarks of a young head of Victoria, F & Co. in an incuse rectangle, and the lion passant (see in pictures). Inside on the bottom plate, it is marked with an anchor for Birmingham, F & Co. in the rectangle, and a large letter "D" in a square with cut corners, indicating the year 1852 (see in pictures). This beautifully, elaborately engraved piece is 3 1/2" long, 2 1/4" wide, and 1" deep. It weighs 163.1 troy grams, 5,245 troy oz. All of the top, all four sides and a band around the edge on the bottom, are covered with fancy engraving. There is heavier elaborate engravings with a flower in each section on both sides of all four corners. Between the corners are rows of fine, fancy engraving producing a texture all around. The front edge of the lid where it lifts to open has heavier engraving. The top has a medallion in the center with scroll work going in all four directions, and the borders around the top have fancy scroll engraving. The other surface of the top has rows of different designs going between the center and the borders. The overhanging part of the top is gold vermeil, The bottom is gold vermeil, with the engraved border around it. Inside, all the surfaces of the lid, and the other interior surfaces are gold vermeil. The top edge that is covered with the lid closed is also gold vermeil, as is the strip at the bottom edge that is visible when the box is sitting on a table. Beautifully made, high quality antique box preserved in excellent condition. No monograms or personalizing marks on it.
