The buildings are nestled at the base of the sloping Mount Everts. Written in pencil on the verso is the information: "Mount Everts Fort Yellowstone, T. C. Everts lost for 37 days 1904." The verso also has printed text that reads: "3506--Hotel Valley from Terraces. Haynes--Photo." 6 1/2" x 8 3/8". Fort Yellowstone was established in 1891 as a U.S. Army fort. The surviving structures now comprise the Yellowstone National Park headquarters, the Horace Albright Visitor Center and staff accommodations. As noted in the verso of the photograph, Mount Everts is named for Truman C. Everts, a man who was lost for 37 days during Henry D. Washburn's expedition. Frank Jay Haynes and his son Jack Ellis Haynes helped Yellowstone National Park gain international recognition for its natural wonders through their photographs.
