(Essek William) Kenyon (1867-1948) was an influential Baptist evangelist, educator, pastor, and author whose writings have been widely read in the Pentecostal and charismatic movements. Kenyon is considered the "father" of the Word of Faith movement (which teaches what is called Prosperity Gospel or Positive Confession). Kenneth Hagin, Kenneth Copeland, Charles Capps, and others owe much of their theology to Kenyon. When D. R. McConnell published A Different Gospel in 1988, it sent shock waves through Word of Faith circles. McConnell exposed Kenneth Hagin as a plagiarist of Kenyon's materials and claimed that Kenyon's doctrines arose from non-Christian philosophy derived from Christian Science, New Thought, and the Unitarians. By implication, the Word of Faith movement was heretical at its core. When Norwegian Word of Faith believer Geir Lie read McConnell's book, it set him on a long journey to discover for himself whether his faith was biblical. Resulting from this soul-searching odyssey was this book, E. W. Kenyon: Cult Founder or Evangelical Minister?, a revision of his master's thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Norwegian Lutheran School of Theology in Oslo in 1994. In this book, Lie provides and overview of Kenyon's life and ministry, explains his teachings, explores the historical and theological roots of Kenyon's teaching, and traces his influence on the Pentecostal movement in the United States, Scandinavia, and other countries. While other books on Kenyon tend to be ideologically-driven volumes, either in favor of or opposed to Kenyon's teachings, Lie's work provides an even-handed assessment of Kenyon's life, teachings, and influence.
