The Story: Photographer Charles Castle is numbed with grief following the death of his beautiful bride shortly after their wedding. He then serves in the World War, working in the trenches as a combat photographer, recording the horrors of war. Following the war and still in grief, a mysterious woman gives Charles photographs purporting to be of fairies - luminous creatures that hover in the void between life and death. His search for the meaning of these photos leads him to Burkinwell, a peaceful English village. But under the exterior this village is seething with secrets and Charles will be drawn into a web of passion, romance and violence. Comment: Along with other great English fantasy films like The Company of Wolves and Things to Come, this is an intelligent and complex film, miles away from the typical Hollywood production. Castle's attempt to photograph fairies - spirits that hover between life and death - may be an attempt to capture something from the spirit world that has taken his late wife, such is the subtlety of the film. By the end, one could argue that Castle actually died with his wife on the mountain, as in An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge. Everything that happens after the opening scenes may be the dream of a dying man. Excellent performances from Toby Stephens, Ben Kingsley and Emily Woof; Rachel Shelly receives special note for her brief but revealing performance! Overall, a superb watch which was totally ignored in America. Per the label, the film has 102 minute running time - the longest and most complete print of this film available. The film is presented in full screen 4:3 format with English audio - no subtitles. This movie-on-demand MOD archive title on recorded media is new and factory sealed.
