Description: Dragon Tree, Dracaena draco, Tree Seeds Unique Long Lived Tropical or Houseplant, Showy Flowers and Fruits, Evergreen, Heat, Wind, Drought and Salt Tolerant The Dragon Tree is an attractive and interesting succulent tree that is commonly used as a house plant, however, if grown outdoors in a frost free climate it will slowly grow to a massive and broad tree that is 25 feet tall and 25 feet wide and with great age, even larger. The terminal ends of the thick branches hold clusters of 2 foot long by 1 1/2 inch wide pliable sword-shaped blue-green leaves. When the bark is cut or bruised the sap flows as a reddish colored resin known as Dragon's blood. The sap is used as coloring matter for varnishes, tinctures and plasters. The Dragon Tree is an extremely slow growing tree. It takes 8 to 11 years to reach just 2 to 3 feet and begin to flower. Flowering occurs every 15 years. The flowers are greenish-white and have a sweet smell, appearing in early summer and are followed by orange berries. The berries are a little smaller than a cherry, pointed and covered in a red, resinous substance and have a sweet taste. The Dragon Tree remains unbranched until it flowers or is otherwise damaged and then produces two large heavy branches on either side of the inflorescence, resulting in a highly branched tree which can be aged according to the number of branches. The oldest individual is thought to be more than 650 years old. The name Dracaena comes from the Latin word 'draco', meaning "dragon". The Dragon Tree is found in dry forests and is native to the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, Madeira and western Morocco. On Madeira and in the Azores, it grows in steep coastal cliffs usually below 200 m altitude. In the Canaries, it can be found in inaccessible cliffs from 100 to 600 m altitude and in Morocco and Cape Verde it grows high in the mountains. Leaf: Evergreen, stiff but flexible, numerous at the ends of the very stout branches, 2 feet long and 1 1/2 inches wide inches long, sharp pointed tip, gray-green. Flower: Small and bell-shaped, creamy yellow-white, crowded on upright branched clusters to 2 feet tall, appearing early summer. Fruit: Fleshy, orange, 1/2 inch in diameter. Bark: Initially smooth and gray, becoming scaly. Form: Heavily branched with a very stout trunk, commonly to 20 feet (reaching 60), often with a crown spread twice the height. Zone: 9 to 11 (Winter Hardiness: 20-25° F) Growth Rate: Slow Plant Type: Evergreen Family: Agavaceae (Agaves) Native Range: Canary Islands Height: 15 to 25 feet Spread: 15 to 25 feet Bloom Time: Summer Bloom Color: Greenish White Sun: Full Sun or Part Shade Drought Tolerance: High Water: Low Maintenance: Low Culture: The Dragon Tree is a very hardy and drought tolerant tree that tolerates extreme heat, winds and salt spray.
