It was the most widely produced German half-track of the war, with at least 15,252 vehicles and variants produced by seven manufacturers. The Sd.Kfz.251/7 "Pionierpanzerwagen" was an assault engineer vehicle with fittings to carry light dismantleable assault bridges on its sides. This half-track had a large track area and characteristic "slack track" design, with overlapping/interleaved main road wheels. It had an open top, which left the crew vulnerable to high explosive rounds and aircraft attack, but for practical purposes the design was so successful that it was produced in four models with no fewer than 23 variants.
