"Douro Shipwreck" The Douro, a British Royal Mail Steamer sank in the early morning hours of April 2, 1882, off Cape Finisterre on the northwest coast of Spain, after colliding with the Spanish steamship Yrurac Bat. The Douro, enroute from South America to England by way of Portugal, was only two days away from its destination when a passenger spotted a light from the other ship coming closer and the Douro officers neglected to take action. Despite a state of chaos, all but six people survived, though the ship and its cargo of several tens of thousands of gold coins was a total loss. In 1995, the experienced salvors Sverker Hallstrom and Nigel Pickford found this treasure at a depth of about 15,000 feet, and recovered it by means of ROV (Remote-Operated Vehicle) technology. Almost all of the coins, mostly British sovereigns but also Brazilian and Portuguese coins of several denominations, with dates as early as 1700 and as late as 1881, were found to be in excellent condition, some practically mint state. The gold sovereign was first introduced in n 1489, during the reign of King Henry VII, and marked the entry of a coin denomination that was issued with a value of one pound sterling. The obverse (front) design showed King Henry seated on a throne, and it is from this inclusion of the monarch, or sovereign, that the new coin gained its name. As a direct result of the Industrial Revolution, a major change in British coinage was brought about in 1816. In order to facilitate the implementation of powerful new steam powered coining presses designed by Matthew Boulton and James Watt, the Royal Mint moved from The Tower of London to new premises on nearby Tower Hill. Queen Victoria, the longest reigning British monarch, began her reign on the 20th of June 1837. The head of Queen Victoria is featured on the obverse of this coin and the reverse depicts Saint George on horseback spearing a dragon. on that was issued with a value of one pound sterling.
