He went on to become NASA's first Chief of the Astronaut Office and Director of Flight Crew Operations, responsible for NASA crew assignments. In February 1973, Slayton was assigned to the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) as a docking module pilot. The Apollo and Soyuz spacecraft both launched on July 15, 1975.
