Description: Be sure to check out all 17 photos to see what's in this stellar collection of top of the line math lab kits. A complete Math Lab for a single student, two students, or two pairs of students. All you need is some rubber bands! Back story: I believe this is an optimal collection of math lab materials to inspire and expand the creative thinking of students of all ages, perhaps ideally starting with 3rd or 4th graders. This isn't idle speculation: I was the Math Labs instructor for over a decade at Peninsula School, Ltd., which started in 1920 and is one of the top progressive schools in the USA. (Peninsula School was captured while I taught there in an hour long PBS special, titled Why do These Kids Love School that's seen frequent use at educational conferences across the country.) I was also fortunate to attend a Math Lab workshop during that time led by one of the 2 creators of the Discover it! kits in this set, the legendary Mary Laycock, one of the foremost mathematics educators of the 20th Century. What's in the kit: The photos tell the story for the most part, but a few comments should be helpful: Discover it! — Back when I purchased these new from Mary Laycock's company, Activity Resources, they were well over $100 each as I recall. And well worth it! They're beautifully (and custom) made from clear and colored plexiglass, similarly housed in a plexy frame, have an outstanding tactile feel, and offer a huge range of simple to advanced geometry related puzzles. These challenges are well covered in the included workbook for Discover it! that Mary helped write. Both the Discover it! Kits and this text are now collector's items -- I checked the web and found a single copy of just the workbook for $46 alone! Giant Geoboards — Geoboards were a favorite with my students. Most commonly geoboards have 5 rows of 25 pins and painlessly teach a range of geometric concepts in a really fun way. So why these huge ones, with many times that much area? You can always just limit their use to a 5x5 section, which is why I lightly drew a box around that pin array on each board, as you'll see in the photos. But when I attended math lab training workshops with other math teachers, I discovered these larger boards allow "thinking outside the box" problem solving that can be really fun -- and can also seriously challenge even experienced math teachers! Cuisenaire Geoboard Activities kit: As a suppliment to the giant geobords, this boxed kit includes a huge number of individual activity card challenges, a teacher's guide, and an additional 2 sided geoboard. One side of this geoboard has the usual 5x5 array, and the reverse side uses a circle perimeter, as shown in the photos. Tangrams— Tangrams are one of the most versatile puzzles ever made, as well as outstanding (and painless) teachers of geometric and spatial concepts, particularly when students are properly guided by a workbook like the one included in this offer. My students loved working with them. There are an amazing number of shapes that can be made with the pieces. You can never really do them all. These puzzles have a stellar history; developed early 1800's tangrams were the rage, kind of like Nintendo, except mainly with adults! Folks would gather to have tangram parties to see who could make a particular shape the fastest. Shipping: I have carefully packed everything in a sturdy carton with padding to assure it all arrives in perfect condition. I ship signature required (unless you request otherwise) for both our protection. I'm known for prompt shipping and careful packaging, as you'll see in the screen grab I've included of my recent eBay feedback, in the images section of this post.
