With over 3,000 descriptive definitions and cross-references and over 600 illustrations, it provides a comprehensive and authoritative guide to the world of ceramics, from the humble brick to the most exquisite porcelain. Specialized words and phrases, frequently encountered in catalogs and not always accurately used, are lucidly explained, together with many foreign terms – Chinese, French, German, Italian – which are often used when referring specifically to the wares of a particular dynasty or factory. The dictionary proper is concerned with the physical nature of pottery and porcelain – materials, processes, types, decorative patterns and styles – and with periods, dynasties, and general categories of wares. Of especial value are the color plates, bringing out such features as the subtle tones of a celadon glaze and the characteristic palette of the Chinese familles, which cannot be conveyed by any other means. An introductory list of principal English and Continental factories, their dates, marks, and the personalities associated with them, compiled by John Cushion, of the Department of Ceramics, Victoria and Albert Museum, London, provides a master reference for the proper names mentioned incidentally in the dictionary and completes a book invaluable both for reference and leisure reading. CONDITION: GOOD. Very clean but EX-LIBRARY hardcover with dustjacket in mylar sleeve. Von Nostrand Reinhold (1974) 319 pages. Ex-library but very clean and lightly read. Inside you'll find the remains of a paper card pocket which was removed from the first free page (the first unprinted page inside the book). There's also a red "discard" stamp on the same page, and a catalog notation on the copyright page. Otherwise the inside of the book is unmarked. The book looks like it was read once, perhaps twice, by readers with a very "gentle touch". Inside the pages are clean, crisp, unmarked (other than as described previously), unmutilated, tightly bound, and only lightly read. From the outside the book is almost perfect except of course there is a library call tag on the dustjacket spine heel, and library identifying stamps on the top and bottom surfaces of the closed page edges. The library stamps are not visible of course on individual opened pages, only to the mass of closed page edges (sometimes referred to as the "page block). The dustjacket may be slightly yellowed, but otherwise it is perfect, seemingly always encased in a protective mylar sleeve (as is customary with library owned books). Note that the dustjacket is taped to the inside of the covers (as is customary with retired library books). Beneath the dustjacket the covers evidence only very faint edge and corner shelfwear, but no blemishes other than simple faint edge wear (no bumped or crushed corners, no cardboard substrate showing, etc.). Given the fact the book has been retired from a library it might lack the "sex appeal" of a "shelf trophy". Nonetheless for those not concerned with whether the book will or will not enhance their social status or intellectual reputation, it is an otherwise clean and only lightly read copy of a rather difficult to find (in superior condition) title.
