This University of Arizona press edition contains a new preface by Abbey and new illustrations by Lawrence Ormsby and Carol Thickstun. Abbey spent two consecutive summers in Arches National Monument (now National Park) as a seasonal ranger and came back later for a third summer. He kept journals of his summers in Arches and used those as well as journals and notes from other experiences in the canyon country to write this celebrated work. Scarce edition and nice alternative to the super pricey 1968 version. SCARCE. This is NOT an ex-Library or Remainder copy! A FINE- book in a NEAR FINE Jacket. Book appears carefully read once. Text block is compact and square. Just a hint of light soil to the full oatmeal colored cloth binding/page edges (see photos). NO writing, remainders, inscriptions, underlining etc... lovely looking book, just not quite crisp enough to grade higher. Dust jacket presents well in Mylar cover and is equally lovely, just a hint of fade to spine panel color and a small matching spot of soil that corresponds with the small stain on the front panel(see pics). Unclipped (but issued from publisher without printed price as the University bookstore would decide their own price when selling. SCARCE book and far more affordable option from the pricey first print from 1968. All items are carefully packed in bubble-wrap and placed INSIDE a BOX for shipping.
