Description: [zipedit] Denmark TB / Fundraising Stamp Under the direction of chief physician, Professor Sophus Bang, the Nationalforeningen til Tuberkulosens Bekæmpelse (National Association of Tuberculosis Control) opened its first sanatorium, in Silkeborg, on June 1, 1903. While there were two other facilities in the city that handled a variety of diseases, this was the only one dedicated exclusively to TB. Over the years many Danes and also patients from Greenland were cured at Silkeborg. By 1958 Tuberculosis was eradicated in Denmark. On February 1, 1959, the County of Aarhus took over the buildings and, until 1987, operated a nursing home there. In 1987 Silkeborg Municipality purchased the buildings including the large park surrounding them. The municipality made the buildings and parks available to the self-governing institution "The Freshwater Center", which has since developed into a national center for the aquatic environment and a living business park for a number of private and semi-public companies. This stamp, issued by the Sanatorium Association in 1905, is actually a receipt for a donation of 25 øre. They are printed in orange and black, ungummed, in sheets of 25 (5 x 5) with no marginal markings. This is a F/VF single, and it is listed in: A. Hartvigsen's "Illustreret Katalog 1885-1920 over Jule-, Velgørenheds- og Foreningsmærker samt Udstillings- og Lejlighedsmærker fra Danmark, Island, Dansk Vestindien, Sønderjylland, Norge, Sverige og Finland" as (1905) #2; Also listed in AFA's ”Julemærker Norden” (Nordic Christmas Seal Catalogue); Also listed in "Green's Catalog of the Tuberculosis Seals of the World" as #182. The condition will be mixed, but none of the lots will be just accumulations of damaged or faulty stamps (unless specifically listed as such). A Note about Poster Stamps and Gum: Because many poster stamp collectors are primarily interested in the image on the stamp, the absence or presence of gum on the back is of little concern. If no mention of gum is made, then there may or may not be gum present. If you are only interested in poster stamps with original gum, please inquire before bidding.
