Description: 6 page letter on 3 statement sized pages with logo and "Quarantine Station, Deer Island" on one side of each page, the first one datelined 13 October 1979, from "Charley" that reads, "My Dear Daisy, It is cloudy this morning. "Thick" as we of the salt sea say. I mean by ???. Cloudy and foggy and I presume I should have work to do as the wind is right to blew in the shipping and the steamers are due. What funny stories you get in your head. Of course I like to get your letters. There are not too many of them. Why did Mrs. Telden give you a lecture on health? I know it has been a long time since we saw each other. Not at the time I saw you last. I did not think of going to work here and as quickly as I have done. We cannot control circumstances at all times. Did you go to the Thayer court? No I do not go to the theaters occasionally. I drop in for a time. I did Sat. night to hear Pinafort, although I have heard it several times. As for the arm trouble, it varies; comes and goes. I don't ??? as there is very much difference. I hardly knew what you meant by serious. The injury I received three years since was of the most serious nature, and no one who knew anything about it thought I could live, but I did. This trouble in my arm is the result of it, and shows me that I have not as yet recovered from the injury. I told you. I would give you a bit of a vision of my work. I don't know that I may have not, as at any rate. I will tell you of yesterday's (Sund.) work. About half past six, I boarded a Brig -- there we waited for a Bark, which came after breakfast -- a Cunard steamer then put in an appearance down the harbor and came up where we were waiting. Then Dr. Berry and I made the visit together as we usually do. Sunday morning. I forgot to say that we went to the city for the mail after boarding the steamer. Inbound to the boat about twelve when dinner - There was nothing there till about three when we went to Galloupes (now Gallops) Island -- then waited outside for two more steamers. I went to the hospital about half past five. Then again for my supplies -- then after that I had two patients to visit - what do you think of that? It is a fair sample of my work generally. Today for it is now nearly noon. I having had to leave you to go to work. We are lying at Galloupes Island for a time, soon, we are going up to the city on an errand. I cannot say what will happen this PM, something probably to upset a quiet day. We are having a lovely day. But it has been three days quite dull. The thick weather having cleared up. But as I see so many vessels in the roadstead, I conclude the sailors think fair weather has not yet come. I find that the waits are quite irregular about getting underway from the city. After they leave Deer Island, they are at the mercy of the hands of the boat, and they do not post ,,,, I enclose the postage on that book and ??? I am very much obliged but you know I am still I like to say, so good up for this time. Yours as ever -- Charley."
