I was Blessed/Cursed to see an unannounced sneak preview of Night of the Living Dead in a small Berkeley, CA theater in 1968 when I was six years old (don’t bother, it’s too late to call child protective services). In defense of my parents, they had no idea what we were in for either. When the movie we paid to see ended, the theater manager made a surprise announcement that everyone could stick around for a second movie for free. Big mistake. Once the nightmares subsided, maybe four years later, it became a fun story to tell though. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an audience react with such utter shock and disbelief since that night. I’m offering up a nice book club edition copy of the sequel as a sacrifice to that memory.
