David Rankin (b. 1946)In 1946, David Rankin was born in Devon, England.Rankin's family emigrated, in 1948, to Australia. His childhood during the 1950s, was spent in Port Hacking a region of South of Sydney. Through out Rankin's teenage years were spent through out the country: New South Wales, Hay, Wagga Wagga, Albury, Bourke and Brewarrina.Rankin was inspired by Leonardo da Vinci and Paul Klee. He was also influenced by the history of Buddhism and Asian art. Developing his techniques and ideas in the outback towns of his youth, Rankin is self-taught.In 1967, developed an idea of what he wanted as an Australian artists. Rankin wanted to show the spirit or essence of God. He thought he would be able to bring together the elements of Western Art and an understanding for the cultures of Asia and the Australian Aborigine.At the age of 22, in Sydney, Rankin had his first exhibit through Watters.
