PRIME MINISTER DAVID LLOYD GEORGE (GREAT BRITAIN) - AUTOGRAPH CO-SIGNED BY: VISCOUNT JOHN ALLSEBROOK "1ST VISCOUNT SIMON" SIMON, THOMAS FERRIER HULME, DAME MARGARET LLOYD GEORGE, E. A. MCCARTHY - HFSID 23768 DAVID LLOYD GEORGE, MARGARET LLOYD GEORGE, JOHN SIMON and OTHERS Album leaf signed by the former British Prime Minister, and by his wife and many others Signatures: "D Lloyd George", "M Lloyd George", "T. Ferrier Hulme 6/6/24", "Robert N Kay", 6½x8 album leaf, and on verso "John Simon April 30 1937", "E. A. McCarthy" and sixteen others. DAVID LLOYD GEORGE (1863-1945) became a Member of Parliament in 1890 at the age of 27. As British Chancellor of the Exchequer (1908-1915), he devised the "People's Budget", raising taxes on upper incomes and large estates, and designed Britain's first comprehensive health and unemployment insurance. As Prime Minister (1916-1922), he directed Britain's policies to victory in WWI. He negotiated with US President Woodrow and other world leaders at the postwar peace conference at Versailles (1919. One of his last acts in office was to negotiate creation of an Irish Free State, a step short of full independence, with some but not all leaders of the Irish Republican Army. A back-bencher for the rest of his life, Lloyd George declined an invitation from Churchill to join the War Cabinet during World War II. Raised to the peerage in 1945, he died before he could take his seat in the House of Lords. MARGARET LLOYD GEORGE (1866-1941) married the future Prime Minister in 1888. The couple had five children, three of whom pursued political careers of their own. Margaret received a GBE from the King for her charitable fundraising during World War I. She presided at the founding of the Young Wales Association in 1920. JOHN SIMON (1873-1954), later Viscount Simon, was a Liberal Party MP from 1906 to 1945. He was one of only three men to hold the three key Cabinet posts of Home Secretary, Foreign Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer. Simon resigned from Lloyd George's Cabinet over the issue of conscription, which he opposed. Later in his career, he opposed Lloyd George's preference for allying the declining Liberal Party with the Labour Party, preferring to support the Conservatives. THOMAS FERRIER HULME (1856-1942) was a leader of the Methodist Church in England, representing it at international church conferences. He wrote several books, including a biography of Methodism's founder, John Wesley. E. A. McKAY was a British medical doctor who wrote an influential treatise on care of war invalids from World War I.
