Small abrasion on upper left edge of paper. Some minor foxing of paper. MEASUREMENTS: 10 3/4 in by 13 3/4 in ARTIST NOTES: David Burliuk was born in Russia and his wife was of Russian nobility. At age sixteen, he enrolled in the Kazan Art School and later at Odessa Art College. In 1904, he studied in Munich, and Paris and later studied at the famous Moscow College of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture along with Vladimir Mayakovski. In 1912 he travelled to Germany, Switzerland, France and Italy, got to know Wassily Kandinsky in Odessa. In 1912-3 Burliuk took part in the exhibition of "der Blaue Reiter" in Munich. The 'Blue Rider' group included works by Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Marc, Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, Henri Rousseau as well as Burliuk's. During the revolution, Japanese Marines rescued him from Vladivostok. After spending two years in Japan, Burliuk moved to the USA in 1922. He located himself in New York and was further active as a painter and art critic. In 1930 he became an American citizen. Art scholars have called him the "Father of Russian Futurism."
