Datura metel Purple Picotee is an annual in the Solanaceae family. Its native range is from Texas to Colombia, but it is still unknown precisely. A short-lived perennial that is not like the species Datura innoxia. It can grow to around 3-4 feet tall and wide. The leaves are dark green with a violet tinge and large. Before opening, the lightly scented flowers are wrapped in a yellowish to purple corolla 6-8 inches long. These flowers on this species are single with purple edges and purple striped outside. The fruits are round balls with surrounding spikes that cover the entire fruit. It prefers to grow in full sun with constantly moist soil that is well-drained. Seeds are from the plants in the pictures. Annual Germination Sow seeds 1/4" deep and lightly cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover and keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 7-30 days.
