Description: Up for bid is an unprepared Dalmanites limulurus from the approximately 425 million year old (silurian aged) Rochester Shale Formation. It was collected this past summer at the world famous Middleport quarry (formerly Caleb Quarry) near Middleport New York. When collecting fossils from the Rochester Shale an unbroken specimen is rarely found due to the brittle nature of the rock. This is what a Dalmanites looks like when it is found, they commonly come out in pieces and their eyes almost always break away with the impression along with other shell parts. Nearly every Dalmanites requires preparation which may include two or more of the following: transferring eyes, transferring shell parts, removing rock from the trilobite, repairing spines, repairing matrix and fixing cracks. For trilobite collectors interested in a Dalmanites without restoration then this is a nice example. It was found in 2 pieces and glued back together (repaired). You can best see where it broke in the picture of the back. The trilobite measures approximately 2.3 inches (63mm) in length. The matrix is approximately 3.5 inches long by 2 inches wide (85 mm x 50 mm). Please feel free to ask any questions. The trilobite is sold as is, no returns.
