Description: Daguerrotype 6th-Plate, 3-1/4" x 2-3/4". There is a light wipe in the hand area but it is not seen when photograph is slightly angled.Photos taken with my cellphone camera so there is some glare that is not on the daguerrotype itself. For Collectors of Dress Styles: The whole ensemble, (dress, jewelry, black lace gloves, hairstyle), seems more befitting of an older girl in her teens or early 20's, especially the dangling earrings and the black lace gloves. This young lady doesn't look more than 10 or 11 year's old. Perhaps she liked playing "dressup" in her older sister's clothes and her mother indulged her with having her photograph taken. For Collectors of Mourning Photos: The young girl is posing by what appears to be a casket, rather than the more typical table. There are dark ribbons around her wrist, matching the color value of the hair ribbons that can be seen above her shoulders in back. Perhaps an older sister died and this young girl is wearing her clothes and symbolically in mourning as evidenced by the black ribbons referenced above. For Collectors of PIP's, Pictures-Within-Pictures: In her other hand is a rectangle, but it's hard to tell if it's a book of a cased photograph. If it's a cased photograph, then this daguerrotype is also called a PIP, a picture within a picture. ---There's something New Orleans-ish about this daguerrotype of a beautiful young and possibly Creole girl. This might just be her first photograph as well as the first time she is wearing more grown-up female clothing. ---The dress has a stunning geometric design, or perhaps it's a vine and leaf pattern. The dress has a lovely and demure white collar. The armscyes are quite high and very form-fitting, the upper arm sleeves are narrow but increase to more ease and fullness at the elbow. The sleeve length appears to be three-quarter length, not extending all the way to the wrists. ---There is just a hint of a pointed lower bodice between her hands. The dress bodice has a horizontal line where the corset ends, and the young lady seems to be standing up for this photograph by the way the dress cascades downward. There are dark ribbons around her wrist, matching the color value of the hair ribbons that can be seen above her shoulders in back. --Her lips and cheeks have been tinted pink and she is wearing gold-tinted earrings, brooch, necklace, pendant, rings and bracelets. ---In her right hand, (left side as you are looking at the picture), she has her hand turned outward, towards the camera, and she is holding towards the camera what seems to be flowers or small bouquet. ---In her other hand is a rectangle, but it's hard to tell if it's a book of a cased photograph. If it's a cased photograph, then this daguerrotype is also called a PIP, a picture within a picture.
