Description: "PARIS AFTER DARK!"-the very phrase conjures up a magical promise of a night of beauty, romance, unforgettable memories. The gray dusk thickens into a deep black night. Up on Montmartre, floodlights play upon the gleaming towers of the Sacre-Coeur. The streetside artists have taken down the paintings which vie with posters on the hill-top walls during the day. The cafes, the bistros, the boites are opening their doors. From one come the strains of "le jazz hot' echoes perhaps of New Orleans or of Chicago or Kansas City-from another come the merry strains of a concertino. The Rue Pigalle streams with laughing people. The warm night air up there on Montmartre is filled with an unforgettable blend of Chanel or Lanvin, steak, wine vinegar and garlic, free-flowing red wine, the mimosa and gardenias on the flower sellers' trays, the scent of lavender proferred in neat lace packets by the wizened old lady with the enchanting smile over there in that dim corner. The odors of the Montmartre night are themselves a symphony of rare perfume, discordant, alive, vibrant, and gay. From Montmartre we see here and there between the huddled houses the lights of the straight, gleaming, wide boulevards. The Arc de Triomphe shines in pivotal grandeur. The magnificent Eiffel Tower thrusts up dizzily into the skies. The patches of hazy dark- ness here and there are the parks-the Luxembourg Gardens, the Bois de Boulogne. Dizzily-rushing lights trace a neoned windmill on the front of the Moulin Rouge. A distinctive script in more subdued illumination proclaims Maxim's. A sudden pool of light amid comparative shadows adds drama to the realization that the massive structure there is Notre Dame. And then tracing beyond it on either side there is the tarnished silver ribbon of the Seine. Other lights rush here and there with almost firefly speed: the headlights of the busy taxis. And the rude, inimitable interjections of the claxons of their horns break in upon, then blend with the hub-bub about us that is the nocturnal song of a great city. This is Paris-the "City of Light"-after dark! Gathered into this superb recording are impressions of the night in seductive, elusive, adored Paris. Here is music which was born in her cafes, music-halls, theaters and in her streets, The warmth and vigor of Paris are reflected in these melodies as in a mirror. Oddly enough, most of them are familiar to American listeners -even if they have not made the pilgrimage to the queenly city. Many have provided the basis for songs adapted into English which have been among the great American hits of recent years. To most Americans, they will be like old friends, just as to the Paris traveler they will be a nostalgic reminder. Those that seem new to the ears will be an exotic experience initially- just as is one's first view of Paris herself. Then, they will become warmly familiar and real, treasured experiences. The excellent Cyril Stapleton Orchestra, near symphonic in its complement, recreates this music with a rare understanding of the essential style and with a perfect quality of mood-making. Even though "PARIS AFTER DARK" is pictured here in purely músical terms, the picture is both accurate and evocative-! This is a must have for any collector of Paris After Dark…!
