This Rhode Island country store also has a Gulf Oil sign and gas pumps out front, and a large sign advertising Charlestown Grist Mill product "Ben's R.I. Johnny Cake Meal." Divided back, DOPS stampbox, unused. Condition: This is an original photo postcard, not a copy or reproduction. It is in very good condition. Comments: Cross Mills is just a short drive away from Charlestown Beach in Charlestown, Rhode Island and the Atlantic oceanfront. Much of the village is on Old Post Road, which is one of the oldest roads in the country, established in 1703 on historic Native American paths near the coast. The village of Cross Mills is one of the town’s earliest settlements, and it got its name from the family that bought a grist mill there in 1709. The village was founded by brothers John and Ralph Cross, and it was John’s son, Joseph Cross, who bought the village grist mill in 1709 from Joseph Davill. Cross Mills was never a large commercial center, but it served area farmers with stores, a post office and grist mills, according to the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission.
