Description: COSMOLOGY, FUSION & OTHER MATTERSGEORGE GAMOW MEMORIAL VOLUME1972, HARDCOVER WITH DUSTJACKET Edited by Frederick Reines This collection of essays by distinguished friends and colleagues of George Gamow was intended to honor him on his sixty-fifth birthday: it is published now as a tribute to his memory. The four decades that have elapsed since George Gamow took his Ph.D. at the University of Leningrad have been a golden age for nuclear physics and astrophysics. During these years Gamow made significant contributions. His work as a theoretical physicist had a profound influence on a range of subjects from the atom to the cosmos. His persistent interest in the evolution of the universe and the ultimate structure of matter made him curious about the possibility of a subtle connection between these similar but disparate worlds. Among his colleagues Gamow enjoyed a reputation not only for his creative intelligence in matters of theoretical physics, but also for his sense of humor and his infectious pleasure in conversing about science. During his later years he won a world-wide following among laymen for his popular books on physics, mathematics, and cosmology. At his death in August 1968, Gamow was Professor of Physics at the University of Colorado. In this book, his friends and colleagues remember him for his participation in "the inspired days of Copenhagen when the neutrino was young and many of today's problems in physics were hatching." They describe his contribution to thermonuclear reaction theory; his "high and far-off days" as a consultant at Los Alamos; and his year at John Hopkins University when his studies of nucleo-synthesis (called by Gamow "elementary cooking") were integrated into the "big bang" theory of the origin and evolution of the universe.
