Infamous Order # 28 * From the Confederate capital The prime content on the front page would be: "Gen, Butler and The Women of New Orleans" which is a lengthy letter from him prefaced with: "The following letter from Gen. butler, explaining his reasons for issuing the celebrated order regarding the ladies of New Orleans, has been received in Boston:...". This refers to his very controversial Order #28 given two months earlier, referring to the women of New Orleans as "women of the town, plying their avocation...". Butler took considerable criticism for this order and in this letter he offers his explanation. It is signed by him in type: Benj. F. Butler. Great to have this letter in a Confederate newspaper.
