Description of Book: If you like modeling the prototype but you have limited space, this book is for you. It covers basics of getting a lot of track into a small area through the use of loops and switches. Details how you can apply these ideas to prototype modeling, using several short lines as examples. Book includes nearly 150 different train layouts specially designed for sectional track. They cover every size space available and varying degrees of complexity. As a general rule, many of them are more complex than the track plans found in the various manufacturers catalogs. All of the track designs contained may be built using the track that came with your train set, REGARDLESS OF MAKE OR GAUGE, although certain modifications may be necessary. In going over the contents of this book, study all the plans, regardless of gauge. Ask yourself if you like the idea of the layout. Then ask if that layout would fit the space you have available. Always remember that any layout can be enlarged. The layouts in this book are more complicated than mere ovals but in most cases you can still add straight sections to make the layout longer or wider. Each straight section added will increase the size of the layout by four to ten inches, depending on the gauge and make of your track. Sometimes you can reduce the size of the layout by omitting straight sections but most of these layouts have been designed to fit in minimum space. If you do drop out a straight section, you may not have room for all the switches on the other side, or grades may become too steep if it is a two-level layout. If you do change the size or gauge of the layout, it is necessary to check the re-design. Lacking the above know-how, it is perhaps easier to build the problem sections of the layout on the floor, using actual track and switches. You can even change from an eight-pieces-per-circle type track, such as Lionel O or Marlin 12 in. radius HO, to the twelve-pieces-per-circle type track, such as Snap-Track, Marlin 15 in. and 18 in. radii, Trix, or Rapido, but you must then allow for the differences in curve angle. For this reason, it is necessary to redesign certain layouts when you switch from one type of track to another. How extensive these changes will be will depend on the size and complexity of your layout. The layouts in this book are also suitable for use with other track lines not specifically covered, including Rokal, Triang, Lehmann, Aurora, Rivarossi, Fleischmann, Mars, and major N and HO Gauge lines using sectional track. They are also suitable for use by collectors using discontinued track lines such as Ives, American Flyer O and Wide Gauge, Lionel Standard, and early European large gauge systems. This is a track book for beginners and others who prefer sectional track, whether in N, HO, TT, S or O Scale. Most layouts are designed for O and S scales using sectional track and table-top space. Diagrams also show how track can be arranged for two train operation. Book includes 186-piece track-planning kit. Modelers who would like to try their hand at designing their own layout will enjoy using the track planning kit. Here are 186 different track sections specifically designed for all popular brands of HO sectional track, and also suitable for reasonably accurate diagrams in other scales where the track uses 12 sections per circle.
