Description: A Compilation of the Messages and Papers of the Presidents - July, 1776 through June, 1914 Complete 11 Volume Set with Volume 11 Being the Index Leather Bound Ex-Library – 9,288 pages of Fascinating American History Authorized by the United States Congress in 1894, James D. Richardson was directed to assemble and publish the important papers and messages of each President of the United States. He finally finished, with the tenth volume of this edition including a June, 1914 message of President Woodrow Wilson. In all, the 10 volumes of papers contain 8,329 pages, with many illustrations, drawings, facsimiles of documents, and in later times, period photographs. Note that the spine of volume 10 does not reflect an additional 12 pages that were added in 1914, after the dies for embossing and printing the bindings were already prepared. The eleventh volume is a 959 page index to all volumes. Note: this is the ORIGINAL 1914 publication, not a set of modern reprints or OCR or other scanned books. It is an ex-library, leather-bound set in acceptable condition on the outside and quite good condition inside. See the images, which are of this set. Except for library markings, pages are clean and unmarked. The leather covers have edge and corner wear, chipping along the tops and bottoms of most of the spines, with several having the top 1/8" chipped off. 5 volumes have a larger piece of the upper spine missing (see image). Volume 3 has a 4-1/2" tear down the back spine edge, which then goes 4" horizontally into the spine. Volume 9 similarly has a 4-1/2" tear down the front spine edge, and then horizontally into the spine. See the two images of these volume edges. The gilt on the closed page edges is still quite bright, with some dulling and marks. There is some rubbing on the front and back covers, but the gilt design is still bright and complete. Lettering on the spines is still fairly bright. There are library labels on the front end papers, library stamps on the front end papers and title pages, checkout envelopes on the back free end papers, a call number label in white ink on the lower spine, along with a "storage" label. Volume 10 has a crack in the front end paper gutter, but not down through the binding cloth, so like all the other volumes, the binding is tight. Despite these cosmetic defects on the outside, this is a very useful set for historical research and enjoyable reading! Books total 44 pounds, so will be shipped in two boxes with signature confirmation.
