CALDWELL - MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT SIGNED 08/23/1872 - HFSID 174657 CHARLES H.B. CALDWELL As Captain of the USS Lancaster, in duty in the South Atlantic, he writes to the Fleet Commander about necessary repairs to his vessel. Manuscript LS: "C.H.B. Caldwell" as Captain, 1p, 8¼x13¼. U.S. Flag Ship Lancaster, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1872 August 23. To Rear Admiral William Rogers Tayloe, U.S. Navy Commanding U.S. Naval Force South Atlantic Station. In full: "I have had the forward batten stripped from the foremast, and the mast reexamined. In addition to the three rotten places already reported, I find the forward hart mast very much decayed; the rot commencing about ten feet from the deck, and extending a distance of fifteen feet, and at a depth through to recommend that the mast be securely fished before the vessel goes to sea." The following year, the Union Mortar Flotilla under his command opened the bombardment of the Confederate works at Port Hudson, Louisiana. The war sloop USS Lancaster was a US Navy vessel from the Civil War to the Spanish-American War. From 1870 to 1875, it was attached to the South Atlantic Squadron under Caldwell's Command.
