Description: Full Title: Comment Devenir Sociologue: Souvenirs D'un Vieux Mandarin Actes SudIn, Arles, France,1995. ISBN: 2742703241. Softcover. In French. Written by Henri Medras; avec la collaboration de Patrick Le Gales et Marco Oberti. Appears to be the only first edition (NAP) for sale on the Internet, the few others are from 1999. This book came from the estate of Daniel and Pearl Bell. Inside the book when I purchased it was a signed and inscribed note that reads 'Pour Daniel et Pearl Bell, ce souvenirs d'un vieillard ( ? ), Mendras.' There is a word after vieillard that I cannot make out (see second photo). Daniel Bell is referenced on two pages in this book. Also inside the book was a copy of a typed letter to Mendras on Daniel Bell's American Academy of Arts and Sciences stationary dated March 29, 1995. Here are some excerpts from the letter: 'Dear Henri: The only 'Vieillard' I recognize is a burinist (malheuresement, maintenant morte) named Roger Vieillard, whose work I have been collecting' 'But no, you are not a 'vieillard.' 'Are you also un vieux mandarin? No, you are not a character in a de Beauvoir novel; and thank God for that.' 'So what are you? A very wise and lovely human being who insists on calling himself a sociologue and does not even shy away from telling people how he became one!' 'It is a joy to have your book and observe the 'hatching' of your ideas and to find myself reliving some of my life in the company of Crozier, Bourricaud, Dampierre, Morin, Reynaud, Touraine, Treantom, and, of course, the incomparable Henri Medras.' The letter is then signed 'as always, Dan' and below that he penned 'with love to' and referenced several of the members of the author's family before signing 'Dan and Pearl.' Daniel Bell's wife, the former Pearl Kazin, was a writer and critic, also one-time lover (prior to her marriage, not his) of Dylan Thomas (see the book A Pearl Of Great Price: The Love Letters Of Dylan Thomas To Pearl Kazin). Daniel Bell was in the habit of copying letters he sent to his author friends and leaving them inside the books they gifted him. At least that was the case with several others I have listed and sold. 'In what he considered his intellectual autobiography: How to become a sociologist or the memoirs of an old mandarin , Henri Mendras describes the birth, the university circuits, the systems and traditions of sociology.'
