About the Illustrator: Gianni De Luca was an Italian comic book artist known for his drawing mastery and the variety of techniques he introduced into the comic art. His works are formally revolutionary, but always for the sake of content: the representation of the movement, the solutions in the board’s layouts, the cancellation of the cartoon scanning for the “table-sequence”, the coexistence of pictorial and graphic techniques, are some of the experimental approaches he tested on some of his most famous series, like the Commissario Spada (Police Commissioner Spada), (1970-1982).De Luca started his career as a comics artists in 1946 for the magazine Il Vittorioso with Anac the Destroyer series, followed in 1947 by the Da Vinci Wizard, and then The Empire of the Sun and the Last Days of the Earth. In the late 1950s he started to collaborate with the Edizioni Paoline, a Catholic publisher, and with their weekly magazine Il Giornalino. In 1957–1959 he worked at La più grande storia mai raccontata ("The Greatest Story Ever Told"), a series of tales based on the Bible, and I dodici in cammino (a history of the Christian Church), and in 1958 created the illustrations for the Edizioni Paoline La SACRA BIBBIA. Other notable work by De Luca is the Shakespearean cycle he made with Raul Traverso from 1975 to 1978. This includes faithful adaptations of plays like 'The Tempest', 'Hamlet' and 'Romeo & Julia'. In the 1980s, he made 'Il giornalino di Gian Burrasca' with Claudio Nizzi, based on the novel of the same name by Vamba, and an adaptation of the Paulo Ferrarini novel 'La Freccia Nera' (1988).
