DESCRIPTION First Edition (ii) + 166pp + 17 colour plates + (ii) Book measures 290mm x 225mm approximately. Simply bound in half crimson textured calf over mottled crimson boards. Spine with five raised bands with author and title in gilt. Marbled end-papers and paste-downs. Top page edges in gilt. Series of 17 full-page colour plates to rear. CONDITION The binding is in good condition overall, and holding firm. Front board is cracked along most of its length with upper 9cm and lower 5cm more severely cracked, board is still holding however but a little fragile. Rear board exhibits minor hinge wear. Some general board wear and some surface knocks and scratches with random marks and small nicks and wear to boards edges, and with some bumping to corners. Internally the pages are generally clean, with random spots and small patches of foxing throughout, more so to end-papers and title page. Colour plates also have random foxed patches with ‘shadowing’ to versos. Please always refer to photo images for a clearer indication of condition. INTERESTING The Reverend John Collingwood Bruce (1805 to 1892) was an English nonconformist minister and schoolmaster, known as a historian of Tyneside and author. He co-operated with John Stokoe in compiling the major song collection Northumbrian Minstrelsy. Bruce's main interest was in the history of Britain, in particular North-East England and more specifically Roman Britain and Hadrian's Wall.
