Description: Chateau Clisson by Colin Campbell Cooper Up for auction: A beautiful oil on canvas of a Castle in Clisson, France painted in October, 1901 by National Academy of Design Member, COLIN CAMPBELL COOPER (LISTED CALIFORNIA ARTIST 1856-1937). The work is signed on the lower left, "Colin Campbell Cooper Clisson Oct 1901". It is also titled in pencil on the stretcher bar on the reverse side, "Chateau Clisson C C Cooper." Cooper was a widely traveled artist and was very prolific, always painting and sketching in oils and other artistic media. Provenance: This work was original sold to Mrs Whiteley who lived at 16th and Spruce in Philadelphia. This location was just a few blocks from 1225 Sansom St., Philadelphia, Cooper's Studio at the time. It then was purchased by Jack Levin, Los Angeles, who lived to be over 100 years of age. We purchased it from Mr Levin's estate. This work comes with a letter of Authenticity from Nathan Vonk of Sullivan Goss, An American Gallery, in Santa Barbara, CA. This Gallery handled a large portion of the Cooper estate and are experts on Cooper's work. Authenticity is guaranteed. Cooper painted a preparatory sketch for this work that was featured in James Hanson's book on the Cooper estate. We have posted a photo from this work (Image #10). We have also post another preparatory study that Cooper painted on one of his trips to Clisson. Our painting is the larger studio work and measures 21.75 X 26.25 inches. It is framed in a custom made, hand carved frame that is gilded in genuine 22k gold leaf. The maker of this frame is the famous Southern Californian artisan, Shawn Speck. The framed work measures 30 X 35 inches. Cooper and his wife, Emma traveled Europe during the early years of their marriage (1899-1902). They loved Clisson, France as evidenced by the fact that they both painted there several times. This work is one of the first Studio works that Cooper painted of Clisson in October 1901. Condition is good. It is on it's original canvas and there is no evidence of repairs or restoration under ultra violet light. Colin C. Cooper- 1856-1937 Painter. Born in Philadelphia, PA on March 8, 1856 into an upper class family. Encouraged by his family to pursue an art career, Cooper was further motivated by the art exhibition at the Philadelphia Expo of 1876. He initially studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art under Thomas Eakins followed by further study at Paris at Academies Julian, Vitti, and Delecluse. After working from 1895-98 as instructor of watercolor at the Drexel Institute in Philadelphia, he moved to New York City. An inveterate traveler, he made many trips to Europe, India (1913-14) and throughout the U.S. in search of subject matter. He first came to California to attend the Panama Pacific International Exhibition and spent the winter of 1915-16 in Los Angeles. In 1921 he settled in Santa Barbara where he taught painting at the School of Arts. An impressionist, his style shows the influence of Monet. Although he is best known for his landscapes with architectural themes, he also painted florals, portraits, gardens, interiors and figures.
