Description: Coach Billy Tubbs 500 Career Wins 1998 NABC Plaque Oklahoma Sooners Basketball. This rare plaque belonged to NCAA coaching legend Billy Tubbs, and was presented to him by the National Association of Basketball Coaches to commemorate his milestone 500th career victory as head coach. Although most remembered for his coaching days with the Oklahoma Sooners, he achieved his 500th victory as head coach of the TCU Horned Frogs. Billy Tubbs grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma and attended Tulsa Central High School. He played college basketball at Lon Morris Junior College and Lamar. His coaching career also began at Lamar, where he served as an assistant from 1960 to 1971. His first head coaching job was at Southwestern (TX), and would later serve as head coach at his alma mater from 1976 to 1980. He then coached the Oklahoma Sooners from 1980 to 1994, and was known for his high scorning run and gun offense and full court press defense. His Sooners would make it to the NCAA title game in 1988. He would coach such Sooner greats as Wayman Tisdale, Tim McAlister, Harvey Grant, Stacey King, Mookie Blaylock, and Brent Price. Tubbs then coached TCU from 1994 to 2002, and made yet another return to Lamar serving as both athletic director and basketball coach before retiring. The text of the wood plaque reads as follows: HONORS AWARD National Association of Basketball Coaches "Guardians of the Game" Presented to Billy Tubbs in recognition of 500 Wins career wins 1998 Plaque is approximately 8” x 10”. Note: it has a few surface scratches (see closeup photo).Item was obtained at the Tubbs estate sale held in May, 2023 in Norman, Oklahoma.
