Description: Clinchfield Vegetable Bowl w/Lid Oval 11 7/8" x 6 9/16" Gold on White 2 Handled An Elegant Decorative OVAL Covered VEGETABLE BOWL from CLINCHFIELD CHINA Erwin, Tennessee, USA, GOLD on WHITE, Molded Handles, Footed w/Smooth Rims, circa 1917-1923 DESCRIPTION: The covered vegetable bowl was decorated by a talented artist to be viewed from all sides. The color palette used is gold on white. The just under the top rim of the bowl is trimmed in bold gold and the edge of the lid is also trimmed in gold. The handles are trimmed in gold paint. The design is very classic. CONDITION: While this covered vegetable is classified as used, its condition is excellent. We can find no defects or damage except the small nicks on the under side of the lid on the flange. There are no chips, other nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. The entire bowl and lid are finely crazed as is typical of pottery of this era. This is under the clear glaze. There is no wear to the gold paint. It is clean & white on the inside. DIMENSIONS: This oval vegetable bowl is 11 7/8" by 6 9/16". The bowl height is 2 3/4" while it is 4 1/2" to the top of the lid. HISTORY/MARKS: Clinchfield China started in 1917 in Erwin, Tennessee. Since the local residents were unfamiliar with producing pottery, potters were imported from Ohio to teach the local residents the methods needed. They produced their first pottery in 1917 with simple molds and some decorations, even hand painted ones. The pottery eventually changed its name to Southern Pottery. Southern Potteries was one of the largest pottery manufacturers in the United States and shipped their product to major department stores in the largest cities such as San Francisco, Chicago, and New York. The Clinchfield Railroad (that runs through the heart of Erwin) was used to deliver the pottery throughout the United States. The stockholders saw the handwriting on the wall and voted to close the pottery in 1957. They paid off their creditors and closed their doors; the pottery did not bankrupt.
