Description: This vintage creamer and sugar set from Clinchfield China is a beautiful representation of the fine craftsmanship and artistry of the Southern Potteries company in Erwin, Tennessee. Southern Potteries arose from artisans who migrated from the potteries in Ohio, which was considered the pottery capital of the world during the late 19th and early to mid-20th centuries. Research by this seller did not find any comparable sets on-line, but the 2-volume guidebook author, Allison Burnette, confirmed its manufacturing date of 1926. He also said the set was not used on the railroad, despite many statements posted on-line about Clinchfield pottery items.This information is from the blog cgpartifact: "The Clinchfield Railroad, which connected the midwest to the southeast, introduced many opportunities to the small Tennessee mountain town of Erwin. Clinchfield was responsible for bringing the pottery industry, specifically whiteware, from Ohio to Northern Tennessee. Erwin had one of the largest pre-1940s potteries in the states and produced at least two pottery brands that are considered collectibles. In 1915, plans were underway for a larger pottery to be built with its own sidetrack, for the Ohioan pottery workers coming in. This large pottery plant became Southern Potteries, starting Erwin's pottery industry."
