Description: Civil War Era Union Army 1855 Rifleman's Leather Cartridge Box w/Tin Inserts - Watervliet Arsenal - Dated 1864 - Original - Excellent Condition - RARE Up for sale is a Civil War Era Union Army 1855 Rifleman's Leather Paper Cartridge Box. This is an Original Leather Cartridge Box. It still has the original tin inserts. The leather is pliable and supple. There are surface cracks on the retention strap and on the fold of the outer flap. It has a strong embossed US in an oval marking on the center of the flap. The interior flap has the maker markings from Watervliet Arsenal and dated 1864, these markings are very faint, see photos. The retention strap is still intact. The internal patch pockets are intact with their flaps, some surface cracks on the leather, see photos. The belt loops and shoulder strap buckles are still present. Excellent Original Condition Box, considering its 160 year age, see photo's for details. This box was used to store the paper used during the Civil War. The box is used, please see photos for detail and condition. Very difficult to fine an example in this condition.
