Description: Civil War British Enfield Cartridge BoxAt the outbreak of war in 1861, the Confederacy found itself in need of equipment to outfit its rapidly expanding army. The South turned to England for assistance, and Great Britain did not disappoint. Vast quantities of war material were sold to Confederate purchasing agents and shipped to ports around the South for distribution to southern soldiers. Included in this war material were Enfield accoutrements sets that included a cartridge box, sling, belt, cap pouch, frog, and scabbard. At least 34,000 sets were received and distributed by the end of 1862, and blockade runners would ensure further supplies reached the shores of Dixie well into the later stages of the conflict. The Enfield Cartridge Boxes were made of sturdy black leather, with a white leather closure, inside flap to prevent the spillage of cartridges, and tins dividing the interior into 5 internal sections. These boxes originally came with either a white buff leather sling or black leather sling and were sometime issued that way. In other instances, the valuable leather slings were removed by the arsenal for conversion into more important equipment and a substitute sling of plain or painted canvas installed in its place. The Confederacy were not the only ones to take advantage of England's ready supply of equipment. Smaller quantities of Enfield accouterments were purchased by the US government, and captured Confederate cargos were sold off to Northern state governments where some of the material eventually found its way into US service. In particular, it appears that Massachusetts issued a significant number of captured British Enfield accoutrements to its soldiers, at least during the first half of the war.Veteran Arms LLC is pleased to offer this quality reproduction of the Civil War period Enfield Cartridge Box. The box is authentic in appearance and construction and comes complete with tins. It can be paired with a buff white sling, black leather sling, or canvas sling (sold separately).
