Description: Up for sale is an interesting paper lot from Private Joseph D Zwisler of Ohio who served in Co B 8th Reg of the Illinois Vol infantry. I bought this lot when I was living in Western New York last year. Looks like her served from Jan 10, 1865 until Jan 10, 1866. Cool lot that includes on letter written in Feb from 1865. The letter was written to his sister and talks mostly about deciding to join the war and represent the family. Apparently he joined and then told them via this letter 6 weeks later after arriving in the south. The letter talks about marching and the weather. It talks about eating oysters they find in the gulf of Mexico. He asks if any of his Akron friends are in the army too. He was in Dauphine Island Alabama. The lot also includes his offical discharge paperwork from1866 as well as the paper work involving his pension going to his wife in 1890s. One is from 1890 and another piece from 1892. It also includes a card from 1890 about the pension work. The lot also includes copies of the paperwork from the the US government. This stuff looks like it was collected in the 1970s. Thats the final photo. The letter is 10 inches by almost 8 inches. It was designed to fold into fourths. I assume its literally to his sister and that he isn't referring to his wife as sister. The pension documents are roughly 10 and half by 8 and half inches. Condition: All show their age. They have all been taped along the creases at some point to prevent splitting apart. The envelope is missing the back side. Its torn bad and missing small parts. The papers have yellowed and all have creases and small tears. Some have stains. They all look like paper from the 1860s-1890s. Especially paper that was just stored in a box or drawer for years. This lot wasn't stored in any archival way when I got it. The pension letters are also taped on the backside. The one is really stained. See video and photos for condition.
