Description: The 49th Illinois Infantry was organized at Camp Butler, in historic Sangamon County. The 49th served 3 years, and most of the men re-enlisted in 1864 as Veteran Volunteers. The unit took part in the Battles of Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Tennessee, Corinth, Mississippi, Pleasant Hill, Louisiana the Red River, and Nashville, Tennessee. An Original Civil War Union Army NCO Commission issued for Veteran Volunteer Corporal James M Byard,, issued at Paducah, Kentucky, Feb 24, 1865 and signed by Colonel William P Moore and by Adjutant Frank J Burrows. 1p ptd, 14.5 x 10". The commission is printed on heavy tan vellum and ink signed. Comes w service info for Sergeant Byard of Jefferson County, Illinois, for Colonel Moore of Waterloo & Lt Burrows of Salem, Illinois. Folds, age stains, edge wear, Overall Good. Historic Paducah, Kentucky was a strategic post and the staging area for the Union Army invasion of the Tennessee, Ohio and Mississippi River Confederate occupied cities.
