This is an ORIGINAL "SOUVENIR OF MOUNT LOWE CALIFORNIA",a folder with an original photograph tipped in inside. Illustrated from original drawings of the railroad up Mount Lowe, California (near Los Angeles) and of some facilities atop the mountain, as well as an original black and white photograph of passengers. Heavy gray card stock. 6" x 9" folded; 12" x 9" unfolded. Per the brief history on the inside of the folder, "The MOUNT LOWE RAILWAY, including the famous incline (now a part of the Pacific Electric Railway System) was built by Professor Lowe at a cost of more than $700,000. It was opened to the public July 4,1893, and has operated continuously since that date without an accident." On the way to the top, riders were stopped to occupy a special scaffold, where their photograph was taken by photographer Charles Lawrence. The photograph was tipped in to the instant Souvenir which was offered to the public at a cost of 25 cents. Financial troubles and natural disasters plagued the project and in 1925, it was sold to Henry Huntington, who incorporated the line into the Pacific Electric Railway, part of the Los Angeles Red Car system. Some of the letters of "Pacific Electric" can be seen behind the persons on the lowest olatform of the scaffold in the tipped in photograph. The railway line was abandoned in 1928 and its ruins placed on The National Register of Historic Places in 1993.
