Description: Chuck Close “John, 1998” 126-color silkscreen, Signed 48/80. Massive, floor-to-ceiling scale. From the artist "I always used to say, somewhat facetiously, that the bigger they are, the longer they take to walk by, therefore the harder they are to ignore."Screenprint in colors, on heavy wove paper, 1998, signed and dated in pencil, numbered 48/80Published by Pace Editions Inc., New York (current price $60K, unframed)Image: 57.5" x 47.5" (146cm x 120.6cm)Sheet: 61.25" x 52.5" (155.6cm x 133.3cm) Purchased from Christies Auction House. Impeccable providence. Available for private viewing in ORLANDO, Florida. The production of this exquisite piece is exhaustively detailed in the 2014 Hardcover Companion Book: "Chuck Close Prints - Process and Collaboration," several pages of which are pictured here, showing the exhaustive process of using 126 separate color silkscreens to bring this image to vibrant life. From the book, at page 86 (quoting the artist): "We don't use any photomechanical processes in the silkscreens. There is not a print of mine in any medium that has used a photomechanical process to translate the marks from a painting to a print. All the marks are created by hand." Later on the same page, from the artist "A lot of my misgivings about silkscreen vanished when I saw that silkscreen didn't have to be flat and opaque, that it was possible to get tremendous watery transparencies, and to make something that had an open, brushy quality where other colors flickered through. I realized a silkscreen could have the spirit and touch of the paintings." When asked "Why did you decide that John should be a silkscreen," Mr. Close answered "I think about how an image that big can best be realized. I think about the incremental size of the marks of the painting. How much smaller will they be in the print? Will we still have enough room to combine enough colors to make it happen?" Chuck Close's subjects are often themselves from the art world, and the subject of this piece is no exception - from Gagosian: "John Chamberlain’s (1927–2011) distinctive metal sculptures, often made of crushed automobile steel, reveal both the stately grace and the expressive plasticity of industrial materials. Exploring the interplay of color, weight, and balance, Chamberlain tapped into the energy of Abstract Expressionism, the premanufactured elements of Pop art and Minimalism, and the provocative folds of the High Baroque." Mr. Close was profiled in not one, but TWO pieces on 60-minutes (the first, a profile of his life and work, and the second, a report by Lesley Stahl on 'face blindness' in March 2012, describing a condition the Artist has a severe and fascinating form of, such that he could have dinner with someone one night, and not recognize them the next). "John, 1998" is a seminal archetypal work in the storied and celebrated career of Mr. Close, and is a rare opportunity to own a piece of art history at a sub-6 figure price. Serious inquiries only.
