Description: Presented for your consideration, a beautiful example of American art glass rendered in the form of a cardinal bird by Christopher Sherwin of Vermont. Having earned a B.S. in Liberal Studies with an emphasis on Special Education from Southern Connecticut State University Sherwin served as a counselor for a time — later shifting careers to that of an artisan. Apprenticing with master artisan Simon Pearce and Orient & Flume Art Glass in California there Sherwin perfected his craft. Returning to his native Vermont he founded his eponymous Christopher Sherwin Art Glass studio where he has worked for more than two decades now. The atelier occupies a circa 1925 mill house in picturesque Bellows Falls and is run entirely on renewable energy. Whether purely decorative or utilitarian, each piece commences as a “gather” of clear molten glass with temperatures exceeding a mind-numbing 2000 degrees. Colours and textures are developed as the glass is manipulated and the artist coaxes out its final form. This beautiful example of Christopher Sherwin Art Glass is formed by mouth-blown and hand manipulation techniques. One of the most beloved native American songbirds, cardinals are sexually dimorphic with each sex exhibiting differing adult plumage colour. Sherwin creates both sexes with this figure being female which lacks the scarlet-red plumage of males. The light brown base (think coffee with milk) is a lovely contrast to the black mask and bright scarlet-red beak. The crest, tail and wing feathers are simply suggested by crimpling the molten glass and the eyes finally animate the piece. As a final flourish, a blush of red on both flanks subtly suggesting wings. Substantial for its size, this is a weighty piece and is signed at the bottom “Sherwin Art Glass April 2011. As it is a preowned piece expect minor wear commensurate with age and usage. There are no chips, cracks nor repairs only some light scratches from shelf wear at the bottom. Approximate Measurements: 4” in height x 5” in length x 3” in width. Smoke and pet-free home. Will of course be carefully parceled to insure safe arrival to its new home.
