Description: Note: These items qualify for both volume and shipping discounts. Ebay is great at the former, not great at the latter. I always check before I ship and happily issue refunds when due, or you can ask when you buy more than one item, "Is this really what it's going to cost?" This wonderfully eclectic set of mugs are just a small part of a great deal of George Washington memorabilia I am posting on ebay. I inherited several boxes in 2022 from a serious collector. As you might know, collectors seldom use their items; these mugs follow that rule. In particular:1. G. Washington: A Man without Example... . This is the largest mug, 4 inches tall and more than 3 inches in diameter. It holds a good 16 ounces of...whatever. The only maker sign on the bottom is an inscribed "USA". I couldn't find another example on the internet. It is completely crazed, in and out, below the surface...in other words, it doesn't come through.2. George and Martha pair. You would be buying both for the price listed. These are coffee or tea mugs, holding 8 ounces in their 4x2-1/2" frames. "Mt. Vernon" is hand painted in gold on the bottom of each; I suspect they were sold there some time ago but I couldn't find them on the web either.3. Painted Toby mug. The general consensus is that Toby Jugs were named for an 18th-century Yorkshire man who got the nickname Toby Fillpot after he drank 2,000 pints of Yorkshire stingo (ale). A Toby Jug is a ceramic pitcher modeled in the form of a popular character, historical, fictional or generic. It can be a person or animal. The original Tobies date back to the 1760s. The first Tobies, made in the form of a seated jovial, stout man dressed in the attire of the period, wearing a tri-corn hat, puffing on a pipe and holding a mug of ale, are referred to as “Ordinary Tobies.” The tricorn hat forms a pouring spout and a handle is attached to the rear. Many derivations of the original Toby Jug have evolved over two and one-half centuries, most notably into the Character Jug. These drinking mugs were incredibly popular and were commonplace in homes and pubs by the 1820s. This Toby mug of George Washington was proudly painted by J. Higgins, who used the same blue paint from the ceramic to paint his name on the bottom. The mug stands 4" high by 3" at its widest and holds 7 ounces. "Mt. Vernon, Va." is etched in handwriting in the bottom, suggesting again that it was made for sale there, but before they were manufactured with abandon.4. Unpainted Toby mug. Same as above, but the bottom reads "Made Especially for Mt. Vernon Shop by Dwight Morris (Ceramics?), U.S.A" in gilt, who also hand-etched his name in the bottom. There was a renowned ceramicist Dwight Morris who, among other pieces, created several pieces of Washingtonia in the 1950s. #s 3 and 4 are nearly identical, so it's likely they both came from his shop.5. Large Toby mug. This 1939 New York Worlds Fair mug stands 4-1/2" tall x 4" wide and holds 12 ounces. It was made by "The American Potter" and featured at the Capital and Labor Joint Exhibit. A pairing you're unlikely to see today.
