Description: Vintage Chinese Mingqi Camel Spirit Object Tang Dynasty Sancai Tomb Figure. This figurine would have been placed in a tomb with other ceremonial and everyday objects, such as horses and mounted musicians, when a loved one passed away. Objects like this were placed in tombs of the wealthy in northern China during the Tang dynasty. These objects ormingqi, meaning 'spirit object'were placed in chambers within the tombsto protect the dead from evil. The large amount ofmingqiin a persons tomb represents their wealth and status within society. The tombs themselves werevery important to the ancient chinese as they believed that when you died your soul split in two, one staying in the human world and the other to the spirit world. Q Animal subjects were believed to help the soul communicate with spirits, make travel in the afterlife more comfortable, and protect the deceased from evil. As you can see in the face of the camel it was serious about the protection of the Tomb & the souls. The Sancai glaze attributes the statue to the Tang Dynasty along with the dragon saddle bags intricately molded on each side of the two hump camel. Camels from other Dynasties were not Glazed and did not have saddle bags. They were more simplistic and plain. Measuring 12" Tall & 9" Long this piece is definitely a statement piece of art.
