It is made of high-quality bronze, with exquisite inscriptions in the Xuanzhen script. The vertical stroke of the character '泉' (coin) in the seal script is divided into two sections, a distinctive feature of Wang Mang's coins. According to the currency system of the Xin Dynasty, one 'Xiao Quan Zhi yi' was equivalent to one five-zhu coin in value. During the establishment of the Xin Dynasty (AD 9-23), Wang Mang issued several edicts to reform the currency, resulting in a variety of names and complex conversions, which became one of the reasons for the Xin Dynasty's downfall. In the first year of Wang Mang's reign (AD 9), during the second currency reform, the 'Xiao Quan Zhi yi' coin was minted, weighing 1 zhu, and circulated as a subsidiary coin to the 'Daquan Wushi' currency “小泉直一” 是西汉末年王莽政权所铸造的六泉之一，铜质精良，文字精美，悬针篆。篆体泉字中竖断为两截，乃王莽泉之特点，按照新莽货币制度一枚“小泉直一”相当于一枚五铢钱的价值。王莽建立新莽（AD9-23）期間，曾多次下詔改革貨幣，名目繁多，換算複雜，也成為新莽滅亡原因之一。王莽建國元年（AD9）第二次貨幣改制時曾鑄有「小泉直一」貨幣，重量為1銖，作為大泉五十幣的輔幣流通。
