Description: On May 20, 1945 Air Mail Route 53 was extended from Memphis to Detroit, via Evansville, Indianapolis, and Toledo. Other stops, scheduled to be included at a later date were Fort Wayne, Indiana, Paducah, Kentucky, Marion, Indiana, and Anderson / Muncie / Newcastle, Indiana. Originally this extension was planned for June 1, 1945, but on only four days' notice the carrier decided to carry mail on the test flights, which started on May 20, 1945. There were no official cachets provided.This cover was one of only 80 pieces of mail carried on the inaugural Air Mail Route 53 flight from Toledo, Ohio to Detroit, Michigan (where it was backstamped) and is listed in the Contract Air Mail Flights (CAM) Section of The American Air Mail Catalogue as 53N7.The Toledo Postmaster autographed the cover.Unable to survive independently, Chicago & Southern Airlines was absorbed by Delta Air Lines on May 1, 1953. From May 1, 1953 through 1959 it operated as Delta C & S Air Lines.
