Description: CHICAGO ALBUM; Charles Frey Antique Souvenir Pictorial Book. Portland, Main; Chisholm Brothers. Rare, no date ca. 1890s. Khaki green boards with elaborate embossed gilt titling and Victorian embellishments. Pages and boards have been drilled and tied with gold cord, ending in a gilt decorative tie. The boards are chipped and worn, corners bumped and frayed. Tip and tail of spine rubbed and lightly frayed. Back is scuffed and scratched with numerous white spots. Fore edge has a small tear. Gilt titling on front is rubbed but legible. White paste-down in front is lightly spotted, no writing. Rear paste-down has faint ink-stamped numerals (photo) that are hard to read, but might be 1896-N. The first page is a foldout double panel (17" wide) drawing of the entire city; the fold is fragile and would benefit from professional repair. The back of the double panel has some penciled owner's notes dated Nov., '97. (photo). Following are 20 additional pages showing important buildings, parks, bridges, with illustrations on a single page; two to a page; four or more to a page. 9.5" x 6.25" No page numbering One of the more interesting views for historians is "Bird's Eye View of the World's Columbian Exposition (held in 1893 which helps date this album). The final page depicts the "Landing of Columbus," the 400th anniversary of which was commemorated by the Columbian Exposition. The final page has the credits for production of the album, printed vertically in very small print (see photo). The Chisholm Brothers and Charles Frey apparently produced similar albums for various U.S. locations (New York, the White Mountains, etc.) and while at first look they might appear to be photos, they are essentially a stone-printed lithographic process with a varnished surface that emulated the emulsion of photo reproduction.
