Description: Replica of a Cherokee mask from the 20s-30s. Pictures of those I was looking at when I carved it are above. I have been interested in/collecting American Indian physical culture since childhood in the 40s, including duplicating things I could not collect. The Cherokee were neighbors in East Tennessee and the Booger Dance has always been an interest. This one is pretty good. Made from buckeye, the preferred mask wood of Cherokee carvers. Dyed with red clay and lamp black, as Will West Long used, although rubbed off to give a light complexion. I carved this one in the 2000s, I think. I made it to be worn. I have not signed it, but I will if you wish. Among other things, Boogers were caricatures of things to be feared - European invaders, haints, devils, disease, more Europeans, boorish visitors, - and ridiculing them helped. Just as all rivals mock each other to one degree or another - Tennesee v. Alabama, Democrats v everybody else - that sort of thing. Buckeye, fur (groundhog, I think), red clay, lamp black. Appx 13x8x4" Appx 1 lb, 7 oz. This is a little bigger than the others - i found a bigger log The book plate is from "Dances and Stories of the American Indian" by Bernard Mason, published 1944.
